Chapter XI
THE PUZZLEMENT OF NIGEL ENNISON
Nigel Ennison walked towards his club the most puzzled man in London. He tried again. ”
He groaned. Lucy sprinted to one side to
avoid the crash and grabbed at Rhea’s solitary patch of
yellow hair, which ripped out loosely in one decayed piece
like strands of rotten corn silk. ”
“It was exceedingly wrong of you,” Anna declared. At this moment, the bell began to toll in a peculiar manner, announcing the
approach of the corpse. “This is mere nonsense, mere tongue-tied fear!”
she said. The world had not passed by but had
gone around it in a tremendous half-circle. By some it was affirmed that a subterranean
communication existed between the thief-taker's abode and Newgate, by means
of which he was enabled to maintain a secret correspondence with the
imprisoned felons: by others, that an under-ground passage led to extensive
vaults, where such malefactors as he chose to screen from justice might lie
concealed till the danger was blown over. ”
“You could never be that,” he answered, “but you are at least more serious than
usual. “I was glad you did not send it back again,” he said.
